Medicare enrollment periods

Medicare enrollment periods refer to specific times during the year when individuals can enroll in or make changes to Medicare coverage. There are several enrollment eligibility periods for different parts of Medicare.
  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). This is the 7-month period around your 65th birthday when you can enroll in Medicare for the first time. It includes the 3 months before your birthday, the month of your birthday, and the 3 months after your birthday.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): This is the period from October 15th to December 7th when you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) plan.
  • General Enrollment Period (GEP) also known as Open Enrollment (OEP): This is the period from January 1st to March 31st when you can enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B if you didn't enroll during your IEP.
  • Special Enrollment Period (SEP): This is a period outside of the regular enrollment periods when you can enroll in or make changes to your Medicare coverage due to certain life events, such as moving to a new area, losing employer-sponsored insurance, or becoming eligible for Medicaid.
It's important to note that special enrollment periods and Medicare eligibility requirements may change over time, so it's always a good idea to check with a licensed Florida Medicare agent for the most up-to-date information.
